What If Transformation Was Never About Doing More?
What is the point of transformation if humans don't benefit from it?
For decades, organisations have operated inside a paradigm of more. More process. More reporting. More systems. More meetings. More pressure. More complexity. More exhaustion. And somewhere along the way, many people have lost the space to think clearly, lead well, collaborate meaningfully and actually enjoy their lives outside work.
Now AI and accelerated transformation is here. No soft landings just a full speed collision with a work reality, especially within the local and central government sector in NZ.
And for many, this is creating fear. The fear of being replaced, perhaps losing their relevance, not keeping up with their work flow daily, feeling more and more pressure internally, not knowing where to turn next, how to fix it and for some this is showing up in significant mental health and physical health challenges. Nothing seems sustainable anymore. Things change on an hourly / daily basis. Decisions are not being made. Context is not clear. Inertia is prevalent. Tensions and emotions are running high in Exec teams.
After thinking about this a lot, I wonder if we are actually asking the wrong question?
What if transformation was never supposed to be only about doing more?
What if the real opportunity is about creating organisations that perform better and humans who live and work better within them?
Because used well, technology should absolutely help organisations to improve all the usual outcomes, like productivity, efficiency, simplify complexity, better decision making etc etc. But it should also create space for people to think, innovate, collaborate, make decisions, solve problems, deliver successfu and be able to live well.
The future of high performing organisations will not be built through exhausted humans trying to keep up with outdated systems and relentless complexity. They will be built through healthier, adaptable, grounded people using technology in much smarter and more meaningful ways.
Transformation is not just operational.
It is behavioural.
If organisations fail to prepare their people properly there will be big repercussions like increased fear, disengagement, burnout, siloed thinking, cultural fatigue and long term leading potentially to disestablished business units and organisations.
With more than three decades of experience across corporate and government sectors, my work increasingly sits in helping leaders and organisations navigate the behavioural realities underneath the transformation piece ie how to get your people ready quickly to embrace it all NOW.
Because perhaps the real measure of successful transformation is not simply how much more an organisation can produce but whether both people and organisations can become healthier, more sustainable, and more effective because of it.
“He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people...
