SHIFT your mind

How do you get out of the hole you find yourself in?

I was talking to a colleague last week about how we “get resilient”. It’s easy to say be more resilient but how do we know what we need to shift and keep going when things are tough. He had had a couple of really challenging months in business and although he had tried to change his and the teams performance, things weren’t working.

Here’s my take on identifying how to handle the tough times.

1. Ferocious conviction

When you believe fully in what you’re wanting to achieve out of life (your purpose) and this runs parallel in business, this conviction drives you forward every day. It’s not a once-a-week behaviour it is full-time, fully focussed behaviour.

2. Resilience

You have to keep getting back up after you have made the mistakes, keep trying new things, tweaking the message, the model, the approach, the business until you hit a sweet spot that feels right for you. You will know when it’s right. It just gels. People will want you, your products and your services will be in demand.

Remember those who are the most successful didn’t get there by giving up. Often when you are ready to give up is when the shift happens. It’s ok to take some time to lick your wounds, that’s natural but hanging out too long here is also defeat.

Resilience is getting back up again and again.

3. Do I actually know what I want and do I want it enough?

The answers to these questions eliminate blame and denial from our mind. We are quick to blame others or trick ourselves into believing that we actually don’t know what we want or simply that we just don’t want it enough. And that’s ok. But where it becomes misaligned is when you don’t want it enough but you want the results or success or whatever the motivator is.

If you don’t have a clear answer to these questions, you may as well stop what you are doing because it won’t work. Take some time out to find the answers. AND apply the learnings. Answers like, ‘I don’t have time’, ‘it’s too hard for me’, ‘I don’t have support’ or ‘it’s not time yet’ are really just excuses.

Gain focus and clarity on your plan.

4. DO the hard yards. Create your own IP

If you want people to connect and buy from you then you better have the experience to prove it. Research and case studies are a start but how do you answer the questions people will ask if you have not experienced a similar situation? In the business mentoring, coaching and consulting world, there are a number of people who coach or consult because they are trained in a system – this will work to a point but if you don’t have any on the ground experience and done the hard yards all learnt from your mistakes and wins, client success can be very limited.

It is far easier to engage with others when you believe in your own offerings and IP because you have created them from real experiences and solutions. A system on it’s own isn’t enough.

5. BE HONEST

What is in the way is in the way. For most, it is OURSELVES because there is often fear around really stepping up and believing that what you have to offer will be valued.

In my view, this is the most important and will eventually be the line that segments success and failure.

This quote nails it for me:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond belief.

Let’s face it, if we believed we were powerful beyond belief as individuals, we would have success everywhere and yet so many of us sell ourselves short over our personal and professional careers.

So, are you going to start getting yourself out of the hole? Maybe it’s time to get some support to SHIFT your mindset. You are worth it. It’s not easy but then if it was, everyone would be doing it. Right?
